Announcing the 2016 ATHE Leadership Institute®
What is the ATHE Leadership Institute®? The ATHE Leadership Institute® provides professional development opportunities for faculty members to prepare for leadership roles in higher education and serve more effectively. Since 2000, more than 200 faculty members have participated in the workshops and mentoring. Presenters include national leaders in higher education as well as experienced chairs, deans, and other executives who volunteer their time and expertise to mentor faculty. In 2016, the Leadership Institute® will be addressing the conference-wide themes of labor, equity, and inclusion through the lens of Convergence: the steady confluence and hybridization of systems, external factors, disciplines, and pressures that define higher education today. The program will also feature career development coaching with a representative from a leading higher education search firm and a keynote address by Dr. Kwang-Wu Kim, president of Columbia College Chicago. Mentors and participants will meet with one another during the ATHE conference and arrange to talk periodically during the year following the workshop. These opportunities can be invaluable for professional development and support – and they are integral to the Leadership Institute’s mission. Nomination & Registration Each candidate must be nominated by a Chair or Dean with a one-page letter of nomination that should speak to a nominee’s leadership potential, interest and/or experience that would allow him or her to benefit most fully from this experience. The ATHE Leadership Institute® registration fees are $550 for ATHE members; $650 for those who are not members. Registration includes all Institute materials as well as a continental breakfast and closing lunch. We hope that the participants will receive registration and travel support from their institutions. The Leadership Institute® is built around an explicit philosophy of “lead from where you are.” It’s programming is useful and appropriate for faculty at almost any stage of leadership development, from “just thinking about it” to those already in a leadership position. Sometimes, the most valuable outcome of attending the Leadership Institute® can be finding out “leadership isn’t for me.” More often, potential and current leaders emerge energized and with new purpose: The Leadership Institute® has been a perfect experience for this moment in my career. The discussions with my mentor have helped me to refine my career goals. More importantly, this experience has given me the courage to want something more – and the skills to start the process. Thanks! --Elissa Sartwell Southwest Baptist University This has been an excellent experience. It has been active, but I have had the opportunity to reflect and begin to share a vision for my future. --J. Randall Colborn Indiana University South Bend The mentor/mentoree relationship has been/will be TRANSFORMATIVE in terms of giving me real tools and understanding of my future challenges and opportunities –Jacob Pinholster Arizona State University What Does It Offer? The Leadership Institute® provides an invaluable opportunity for exchange with peers from other institutions for sharing of ideas, best practices, and partnerships, but the core of its value comes from the mentorship relationship: No professional development opportunity in my entire career has been nearly as valuable to me as the Leadership Institute®. I simply cannot recommend it highly enough. --Scott Shattuck Stephen F.
