DIRECTION OF A CONCERT READING OF A NATIONAL PLAYWRITING PROGRAM (NPP) TEN-MINUTE PLAY
This event is intended for students interested in directing concert readings of original material and who want to work collaboratively with playwrights and help bring their writing to life. You will also be assigned a faculty mentor who will help guide you through the nuances of concert readings of original material.
CRITERIA
Direct a concert reading of a new ten-minute play chosen from among the finalists for the National Playwriting Program Ten-Minute Play Region 5 Festival.
In order to promote collaboration between the director and the playwright, the playwright will be in attendance and involved in the process. Concert Reading will be defined as having no sets, props or costumes; actors will stand-up and sit-down only to indicate entrances and exits, and one actor will be cast to read stage directions, if necessary. This will allow the director and actors to focus on character development, language, subtext, rhythm, and pacing in order to bring the text alive for the playwright and for the audience.
