Region 5 is thrilled to again offer the Musical Theatre Intensive at Festival 52 in Sioux Falls, SD. The goal of the Intensive is to celebrate and recognize outstanding musical theatre students within Region 5 and offer educational opportunities to work with musical theatre professionals. Selected performers will participate in a cabaret performance to be held at the end of the week.
Again this year, dance will be part of the Musical Theatre Intensive. Dancers will be given the opportunity to learn choreography from a Broadway musical, which will be showcased at the cabaret performance.
Please note: A performer can AUDITION for both singing and dancing, but CAN NOT PARTICIPATE in both. Full information is below. Everyone involved in the Musical Theatre Intensive will sing and dance in an Opening Number. Music will be emailed to those auditioning prior to the Festival.

Festival Participation Details FOR SINGERS
Group numbers, duets, and soloists are encouraged to showcase their work at the Intensive. Singers will work with professionals to perfect their selection and showcase their work. The Intensive is looking for strong acting and singing. Bring a duet you worked in class! Have a group number from a previous show? Audition with that! The festival process for this event will work as follows:
- Participants will present their song in a preliminary audition. From the preliminary round musical theatre Guest Artists will select 20 acts as finalists who will be showcased in the Musical Theatre Intensive Cabaret Performance to be held at the end of the week. The Musical Theatre Intensive Finalists will also have the opportunity to work with Guest Artists on their material during an all-day intensive workshop occurring on Thursday of Festival week.
- Any KCACTF eligible student (or group) may audition with the certification of a faculty member from their college or university. Group numbers and duets are encouraged to audition!
- There will be one round of preliminary auditions which will take place on Tuesday. We have a limited number of audition slots, so please register early. Each act will be given a 4-minute slot for their 3-minute audition and introduction. Audition slots will be pre-assigned and a confirmation email will be sent to the performer with the audition time prior to the festival. Just like in the Irene Ryans, auditions will be timed, and students will be asked to stop at the 3 minute mark.
- Internal cutting is permitted as long as cuts are clearly marked.
- All selections must be performed with live piano accompaniment. A pianist will be provided. Students may choose to bring their own pianist if they prefer. All music must be clearly marked and performance-ready WHEN YOU ATTACH IT BELOW. Limited time will be given for explanation prior to the audition.
- Auditioners should slate their name, the title of the song, and the production it is from as a part of the audition.
- Faculty Member/Mentor must approve and verify the student status of the act by signing off on the interest form. (see details below)
- Auditions will not be scheduled until the completed form, including uploaded PDFs of sheet music and Faculty Mentor verification, has been received.
- Students must also bring a hard copy of their sheet music, in the correct key, clearly marked with any accompanist notes, and not cutting off any necessary bass line notes, key signatures or other musical markings, in a binder. No reflective sheet protectors please.
- There will be a response session on Wednesday for those not invited to participate in the Cabaret.
Nomination and Criteria for Singing Performers
- Ability to play urgent, strong and clear objectives as an actor throughout the song. Student (or group) must create an arc to the song in terms of storytelling, with a clear beginning, middle and ending.
- Ability to make varied, specific and bold acting and singing choices, which are expressed throughout the performance lyrically and musically.
- Ability to perform the song with vocal excellence, exhibiting a healthy and varied vocal instrument through which the student (or group) makes varied, informed musical choices that add texture and layers to their overall performance. Must exhibit a strong understanding of the lyrics and orchestrations; musicality is strongly considered.
- Ability to physically connect to the song, making strong and varied choices expressing their character fully physically as well as emotionally.
- Student (or group) displays strong physical movement that is connected and informed by the music and lyrics of the selection (if choreography is utilized).

Dancers are wanted to perform as part of the Musical Theater Intensive. Chosen performers will be dancing and singing at the final cabaret performance. Auditions are open for all who register up to a maximum of 50, and will take place on Monday afternoon. All dancers are required to stay for the entire audition time. Some pertinent experience is required. Dancers must submit a completed Dance Interest form (below) for an audition slot.
The festival process for this event will work as follows:
*A digital scan of the music that each performer will sing at the dance audition will be provided and attached to a confirmation email that will be sent to each person accepted for the audition. This music is to be learned and readied to present prior to the dance audition.
Nomination and Criteria for DANCERS
Dancers are wanted to perform as part of the Musical Theater Intensive. Chosen performers will be dancing and singing at the final cabaret performance. Auditions are open for all who register up to a maximum of 50, and will take place on Monday afternoon. All dancers are required to stay for the entire audition time. Some pertinent experience is required. Dancers must submit a completed Dance Interest form (below) for an audition slot.
The festival process for this event will work as follows:
- On Monday, DANCE participants who have been accepted will be taught an audition piece. On Tuesday afternoon, finalists will be announced. Then, throughout the week, the finalists will learn the entire number and perform it at the Cabaret Performance at the end of the week.
- Students must have knowledge in the performance of Musical Theatre Dance, Singing and Acting technique for a successful audition.
- Any KCACTF eligible student may audition with the certification of a faculty member from their college or university (use application form below.)
- A Dancer's audition will not be scheduled until the completed form, including uploaded Faculty Mentor confirmation, has been received. Please find all the forms below.
*A digital scan of the music that each performer will sing at the dance audition will be provided and attached to a confirmation email that will be sent to each person accepted for the audition. This music is to be learned and readied to present prior to the dance audition.
- Students must also wear proper dance attire for the audition. No baggy pants or t-shirts. For the performance, students will be asked to wear all black dance clothes. Please come to the Festival prepared for that as well.
- There will be a response session on Wednesday for those not invited to participate in the Cabaret.
Nomination and Criteria for DANCERS
- Intermediate to advanced experience in Musical Theatre Dance, Singing and Acting for a successful audition.
- Dancers must have approval of a Faculty Mentor to audition.
