Thursday 9:00 - 10:30 AM, Washington Pavilion, Imagination Lab (Sign Up Required)
In an effort toward continued opportunities for growth, development and collaboration among student theatre artists, Region 5 will offer the Collaborative Theatre Challenge (CTC) as part of Festival 52 in Sioux Falls. Over the course of 2-3 sessions throughout the week, the CTC brings together student designers with a professional playwright in order to visualize a new play for the first time. Their work will then be displayed in the Design Expo at the end of the week.
This year, Region 5 is excited to welcome professional playwright, Rachel Bublitz as a Festival Special Guest. Read more about Rachel here.
Rachel’s new play Funny, Like an Abortion will be featured as part of Festival 52’s Collaborative Theatre Challenge, and will also receive a staged reading during festival week.
About the play:
In this dark comedy, Monroe finds herself knocked up, and since abortions are illegal in the United States, she throws a surprise abortion party with her best friend Jade. Monroe prepares over twenty at home abortion options for them to sort through, neither will walk away until they select the best of all of these terrible options. But that's not all! Come on down for juggling, a tap dancing number, and a horrific view at what our future may hold.

Costume Runway, Celebrating the 20s
Tuesday 9:30 - 12:15 PM, Orpheum Theatre, Classroom (Sign Up Required)
Costume Runway is an annual favorite. Students work in teams of two, draw a character at random, have 20 minutes for research and planning, and spend the rest of the intensive to drape a costume for that character. At the end of the session, the forms are put on display for the remainder of the festival. This year, we're celebrating the new decade by draping costumes for the 1920s. It's a big decade and not every character would fit in a speakeasy, so bring your imagination. Participants are provided with a dress form, pins, scissors, and there is a supply of fabric to utilize. To replenish and diversify supplies, participants are required to bring 2 yards of fabric to add to the collection, and you're welcome to bring more. This is a great way for your shop manager to clear out some old fabric, if they are so inclined.
Skill Level: Beginning
Students Only
Presented by Emily Ganfield, Coe College / Kirkwood Community College
