CALL FOR THEATRE REVIEWS
The Institute for Theatre Journalism and Advocacy (formerly National Critics' Institute) was established to assist in elevating the level of arts criticism and to provide writers the opportunity to grow at the same pace as the artists, whose work they review and interpret. The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival sponsors workshops at each regional festival where students with backgrounds in theatre, English, and journalism write daily critiques of plays in round-table discussion sessions.

Students selected for the institute will be notified of their acceptance as soon as possible, and no later than mid-December. Members of the institute will meet in daily workshops at the Festival with writers and journalists with diverse backgrounds in theatre, journalism, criticism, etc. During the festival, the writers will see and write about performances and other festival events. These pieces will be electronically posted and evaluated by each member of the Institute.
**After the Institute is concluded, one of the student writers will be selected and materials passed on to a National Committee where the top four critics selected from the eight regions will be selected to go to the Kennedy Center National Festival.**
From the four critics selected, at least one writer will be chosen to attend the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center during its national playwriting conference (usually early to mid-July), where he or she will work with leading theatre journalists from across the United States.
Select as many promising writers at your institution as possible to compete for this prestigious award, even from related departments such as English, philosophy, or journalism. If you think other departments have students who would be interested, please feel free to share this information.
Please contact Deidre Ensz-Mattox at [email protected] if you have any questions or suggestions. We look forward to working with you and reading the works of your best undergraduate and graduate writers from theatre, journalism, English, or any related programs.
