DIRECTION OF A SCENE FOR THE STAGE DIRECTORS AND CHOREOGRAPHERS SOCIETY (SDC) SCHOLARSHIP.

Entry deadline, December 13

The SDC event is intended for experienced students who have directed several scenes OR a fully mounted production. Students in this program will receive feedback on the final product from one or more professional directors and/or educators during the Festival. During the regional festival one individual will be selected by one or more SDC member(s), will go to the national festival in April to attend workshops, talk with and observe professional directors and participate in other training experiences. That individual will also receive a one-year membership in SDC. Students must submit all materials by December 13, 2019, in order to be considered.

We will once again include up to 21 participants who will showcase only five minutes of their prepared scene in the preliminary round.  These five minutes must be contiguous and you are urged to choose either the first five minutes or the last five minutes of your scene.  Time this selection carefully.  Two out-of-region directing practitioners/educators will respond to your scene without the benefit of looking at your directing book. These two responders will select the final candidates based on the directing book, an interview, and the scene.

The SDC event will be open to any faculty interested in attending.

To prepare a scene for the Region 5 festival, link to the national website at http://www.kcactf.org/directing/index.html. Here you will find the list of approved scenes from which to choose.   NOTE—your scene must be chosen from this published “National List of Scenes.”

REGION 5 CRITERIA:

You must cast actors who are current students and registered for the 2020 KCACTF Regional 5 Festival and rehearse on your own prior to the festival.  For the definition of “current student,” please see the guidelines for the Irene Ryan Scholarship Auditions.

You must use minimal sets, props or costumes; directors may bring what they want but there will be no storage available on site other than immediately prior to performance of the scene. SET UP may take NO MORE THAN 3 MINUTES. Some basics (table, chairs and rehearsal blocks) will be available. You will be notified by December 13, 2019 regarding the specific orientation of the space (a classroom, a proscenium, a thrust, etc.) as well as a list of available furniture.

NOTE: The focus of this event is on director vision with regard to working with actors: character analysis & development, intended action, motivational understanding, picturization, composition, pace, tempo, rhythm, etc. Specificity of vision in ACTING is key. Design elements are NOT a major consideration.

 A COMPLETE APPLICATION CONSISTS OF:

1. A completed entry form that includes a statement of intent, title of chosen scene, names of student actors, and a list of your training and experience in directing. ALL INFORMATION SHOULD BE ENTERED IN THE ENTRY FORM.

2. Statement of intent should explain why you want to be a director and how you think the KCACTF/SDC Scholarship Audition experience will benefit you in your studies and your career. This statement should also include your intent to attend the entire Region 5 Festival, attending the requisite meetings, rehearsals and workshops throughout the week.

3. A faculty member (mentor) in the student's home theatre department must verify the student status of all cast members and the student director. A request for this information will be sent upon receipt of student's entry submission.  It is the director's responsibility to ensure the appropriate faculty has completed the online form verifying the status of all students involved in the scene.

Please Note: Participants must present a detailed prompt book, comprised of materials from the scene, prior to the final round. The prompt book should include: a written statement that reflects analysis of the scene, as per the National Guidelines; visual materials (ground plan, blocking diagrams, etc.); critical materials (dramaturgical research, text, language, character analysis, etc.); and the working script for the scene with notes, edits, etc.   The prompt book will be reviewed as part of the interview and response phases of the process, which will lead to selection of the regional honoree. Failure to provide the required prompt book at the time of the performance at the Festival will result in disqualification from the event.
