Connective Threads: Inspiration and Appropriation in Design
Wednesday 1:00-4:00PM, Des Moines Social Club, 211 (Art Classroom)

In a quest to create visual identities and environments, designers often cite "inspiration" as rationale for borrowing racial and ethnic imagery, style and goods from cultures other than their own. The responsible treatment of these sources have risen to new heights of awareness for many designers and artists. Why, then, does cultural appropriation in design continue? What is causing the breakdown between borrowing responsibly and designs that appropriate? Come question and challenge current design process paradigms, and see how they seem to connect to the continual clash of inspiration and appropriation.

A Technical Director's Guide to Repertory Theatre, Joshua Frachiseur
Let's discuss some of the tips, tricks, and equipment used to build scenery for repertory theatre.  There are a number of Theatres who produce repertory theatre (more than one show presented on one stage in rotation).  This allows visiting patrons to see more than one show in a short period of time, sometimes in the same day.  The time for the "change-over" can vary from overnight to less than an hour.  To build scenery that can fold up and disappear and have another set of scenery appear, requires a unique set of skills.  Some of the most fun and challenging experiences I have had in theatre have nothing to do with the show, but how that show plays with another one. Intensive: Connective Threads: Inspiration and Appropriation in Design Valerie, St.Pierre Smith

What is causing the breakdown between borrowing responsibly and designs that appropriate? Come question and challenge current design process paradigms, and see how they seem to connect to the continual clash of inspiration and appropriation. Participation Limit 20
