Performing Arts Administrator

Performing Arts Administration Specialist (Posting Number 0403499) The James Madison University School of Theatre and Dance seeks a Performing Arts Administrator with skills in arts management, marketing, grant writing, and financial planning. The specialist will collaborate with other arts management and marketing personnel in the College of Visual and Performing Arts to coordinate box office, house management and community relations. Responsibilities will include: long-range planning; securing music and literary rights; negotiating and executing contracts for visiting artists, and processing performing arts union paperwork; coordinating special events, management of production budgets including grant allocations; collaborating with various offices on campus to promote dance and theatre events, producing programs and newsletters. The candidate will have excellent writing skills, management experience in a not-for-profit performing arts organization, financial management in a performing arts environment, and will demonstrate an interest in contributing to the education of undergraduate performing arts students. An M.F.A. is preferred, but other appropriate degrees will be considered with experience in a professional or educational performing arts environment emphasizing theatre and dance events. Administrative and professional faculty members are appointed on an annual basis and reappointment is based on satisfactory performance. The School of Theatre and Dance offers a B.A. degree with concentrations in theatre, musical theatre and dance. It is part of a recently established College of Visual and Performing Arts, with a new $92 million performing arts center scheduled to open in 2010. The preferred start date is July 1, 2010. I am looking for a temporary replacement, during a leave of absence that has arisen suddenly. This would be a good opportunity for a grad student, needing an internship, or someone wishing to gain a little shop management experience. If wanted the position could begin earlier to allow for training/ learning the shop/ supervising the entire build period. FYI, ESU is located 2 hours driving distance from Kansas City. It would be feasible to fly to KC for USITT, and arrange transportation to Emporia afterwards. Following is a description of the position: Emporia State University Department of Communication and Theatre is seeking an acting costume shop manager for the month of April. Responsibilities include attending production meetings, in conjunction with the Costume Designer coordinating & attending fittings, coordinating quick change rehearsal if necessary, attending & coordinating work calls, attending dress rehearsals, supervision of costume shop employing 7 student employees, supervision of practicum students, supervision of student production crews, supervision of beginning stage costuming class. Minimum qualifications include draping, patterning, alteration skills, and ability to operate domestic sewing machines, sergers, and industrial ironing equipment. Teaching Theatre Appreciation depending upon qualifications. Preferred qualifications a bachelor’s degree in theatre costuming or an equivalent in a related discipline and minimum of one-year professional experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Assistant/Associate Professor of Movement and Acting:  The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago invites applications for the fall of 2010 for a full-time, tenure track position, teaching Movement for Actors and Acting to a diverse student body in an urban multi-cultural conservatory in both the BFA and MFA Acting Programs.  Other  responsibilities include directing and coaching productions, advising and service.

Qualifications:  MFA or professional equivalent.  The ideal candidate must have expertise in teaching methods of self-organization and expressive movement. Certification and/or significant experience in teaching Laban/Bartenieff is required.  Significant experience teaching acting in a theatre training program is also necessary. The successful candidate will become a member of an active Department of Theatre Arts located within the College of Arts and Humanities. The Department of Theatre Arts consists of eight faculty, three staff and 60 majors and minors. This position will be responsible for: Teaching in and coordinating the acting/directing sequence; general education and teaching in an area of specialty as needed within the departmental structure.
