Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) National Fellowship Scene Audition

For experienced students who have directed several scenes OR a fully mounted production. Student directors must submit an application with supporting materials in advance. Students in this program will receive feedback on the final product from one or more professional directors and/or educators during the Festival. The regional winner, selected by one or more SDC member(s), will go to the national festival in April 2010 to attend workshops, talk with and observe professional directors and participate in other training experiences. Winner will receive a one-year membership in SDC. Students must submit an application with all required supporting materials by December 7, 2009, in order to be considered for the audition.

To prepare a scene for the Region V festival, go to www.kcactf.org; "Students'; "SDC/Directors/Choreographers".  Here you will find the list of approved scenes from which to choose and guidelines for directors and coaches.

NOTE—your scene must be chosen from this published “Festival 42 Approved Scenes.”

Region V Criteria:
You must cast actors who are current students and registered for the 2010 KCACTF Regional V Festival and rehearse on your own prior to the festival.  For the definition of “current student,” please see the guidelines for the Irene Ryan Scholarship Auditions. The chair of the theatre department (or the equivalent academic officer) must verify the student status of all cast members and the student director by signing the application form.
You must use minimal sets, props or costumes; directors may bring what they want but there will be no storage available on site other than immediately prior to performance of scene. Some basics (table, chairs and rehearsal blocks) will be available.  The specific orientation of the space (a classroom, a proscenium, a thrust, etc.) will be published no later than December 15, 2009, and a preliminary list of available furniture will be published no later than January 1, 2010.

SDC Scholarship Application Process
Selection from among the regional pool of applicants will be limited to twelve candidates chosen from among applicants with sufficient training and experience to merit the opportunity. Materials will be reviewed by one or more directing professionals and/or educators from outside Region V Academic Theatre who will recommend a slate of participants to the Region V Executive Committee, which will confirm the final list of participants.
A complete application consists of:
1 - Letter of intent explaining why you want to be a director and how you think the KCACTF/SDC Scholarship Audition experience will benefit you in your studies and your career. Include name, all contact information, affiliated institution, and home faculty mentor.
2 - Statement of intent to attend the entire Region V Festival held in Overland Park, KS from January 17-23, 2010, attending the requisite meetings, rehearsals and workshops throughout the week.
3 - Letter of support detailing your accomplishments and potential as a director from a faculty member at your home institution and department. Letters from artistic directors or other theater professionals are welcome IN ADDITION to a letter from a faculty member. No more than TWO letters total.
4 - A resume that focuses on your training and experience in directing.
5 - A completed on-line application form.

Please Note: Those chosen to have their work presented at the festival must create a detailed prompt book, comprised of materials from the scene the student is directing, prior to the scene’s first performance. The prompt book should include: a written statement that reflects analysis of the scene, as per the National Guidelines; visual materials (ground plan, blocking diagrams, etc.); critical materials (dramaturgical research, text, language, character analysis, etc.); and the working script for the scene with notes, edits, etc.

The prompt book will be reviewed as part of the interview and response phases of the process, which will lead to selection of the regional winner (as described above). Failure to provide the required prompt book at the time of the performance at the Festival will result in disqualification from the event.
